History

The history of São Martinho began in Italy in the late Nineteenth century, when members of the Ometto family immigrated to Brazil. At the time, they brought with them the dream and hope for better living and working conditions in the new country. In the interior of São Paulo, they worked united and persevering, paving the way little by little to build a trajectory of rare success.

They set up their first sugarcane mill on the Olaria homesite in 1914. In 1932, at Fazenda Boa Vista located in the Limeira region, the family produced sugar for the first time.

In 1937, the Iracema Mill was purchased in Iracemápolis, a town in the São Paulo hinterlands, and was revamped as an alcohol distillery. In 1946, this mill started to manufacture sugar, as well. Three years later, the Omettos acquired the São Martinho Mill, located in the city of Pradópolis, about 330 km from the capital of São Paulo; it has since become one of the world's largest sugarcane processing operations.

Over the decades, the two mills have grown and been modernized. A unified structure was created in 2000 to manage the business in a more professional manner, leading to new investment opportunities.

The business group concept was consolidated in recent years by standardizing its brand. This helped bolster performance, especially after the company went public in 2007 and, hence, becoming increasingly more competitive in the markets in which it operates.
